1. Our Commitment
Vensale believes that building a successful e-commerce business and protecting our environment are not mutually exclusive goals. As a Nigerian technology company, we are acutely aware of the environmental challenges facing our communities โ from plastic waste in Lagos waterways to climate change impacts on agriculture and livelihoods across the country.
This Ecological Policy outlines our current commitments and future roadmap for reducing our environmental footprint and contributing positively to the communities in which we operate.
2. Sustainable Packaging
Packaging waste is one of the most visible environmental challenges in Nigerian e-commerce. Vensale is committed to addressing this head-on:
- Transitioning to 100% recyclable or biodegradable outer packaging by 2026
- Eliminating single-use plastics from all Vensale-branded packaging by end of 2025
- Implementing right-sizing algorithms to reduce void fill and unnecessary packaging material
- Using recycled paper and cardboard from FSC-certified suppliers wherever possible
- Piloting a packaging take-back programme in Lagos starting Q3 2025
We encourage our marketplace sellers to adopt sustainable packaging practices and provide guidance through our Seller Education Centre on vensale.app.
3. Logistics & Carbon Emissions
3.1 Last-Mile Delivery
Transportation is the largest source of emissions in e-commerce operations. Vensale is actively working to reduce the carbon intensity of our last-mile delivery:
- Piloting electric motorcycle deliveries in Lagos Island and Mainland routes
- Route optimisation software to reduce total vehicle kilometres driven per order
- Prioritising logistics partners with documented environmental policies
3.2 Warehouse Energy
Our fulfilment centre at Isashi, Ojo, Lagos is transitioning to:
- Solar-powered electricity supplementing grid power to reduce diesel generator dependency
- Energy-efficient LED lighting and motion-sensor controls throughout the facility
- Rainwater harvesting for facility cleaning and sanitation needs
4. Responsible Sourcing & Seller Standards
Vensale encourages responsible sourcing practices among the sellers and brands on our platform:
- We give preferential platform placement to sellers demonstrating sustainable practices
- We prohibit the listing of products made from endangered species, banned materials, or substances harmful to the environment under Nigerian and international law
- We partner with Made-in-Nigeria initiatives to promote local production and reduce import transport emissions
5. E-Waste Management
Electronics represent a significant and growing waste challenge in Nigeria. Vensale is committed to responsible e-waste management:
- Partnering with licensed e-waste recyclers certified by the Federal Ministry of Environment
- Offering a device trade-in and recycling programme on qualifying electronics categories
- Including responsible disposal guidance in packaging for all electronics sold on our platform
- Educating customers on the harm of informal e-waste disposal through our blog and social media
6. Community & Social Impact
Vensale recognises that environmental sustainability is deeply connected to social and economic wellbeing. Our community programmes include:
- Supporting youth entrepreneurship in Ojo LGA and surrounding communities through seller onboarding and training
- Partnering with Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) on clean-up initiatives in the Isashi and Ojo axis
- Funding tree-planting initiatives in partnership with Nigerian environmental NGOs
- Publishing an annual Environmental and Social Impact Report available on vensale.app
7. Customer Participation
We believe our customers have a role to play in building a more sustainable e-commerce ecosystem. Vensale supports customer action through:
- A 'Green Choice' product badge for items meeting our sustainability criteria
- Carbon offset contributions offered at checkout (optional donation per order)
- Tips on sustainable shopping, reducing packaging waste, and responsible disposal featured in our newsletter and app
8. Continuous Improvement
Our ecological commitments are a journey, not a destination. Vensale will review and update our environmental targets annually, seek third-party verification of our key claims, and transparently report our progress โ including where we fall short โ in our annual Sustainability Report.
We welcome feedback, partnerships, and accountability from our customers, sellers, and communities. If you have suggestions for how Vensale can do better environmentally, please reach out:
